Both of them became frightened. One friend quickly climbed up a tree to save himself. The other friend did not know how to climb a tree. He remembered that a bear never attacks a dead body. So, he lay on the ground, closed his eyes, and held his breath. The bear came near him, smelled him, and went away without harming him. After the bear had gone, the first friend came down from the tree and asked, “What did the bear whisper to you?” The second friend replied, “The bear advised me never to trust a friend who leaves his companion in danger.” The selfish friend felt ashamed.

Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Hearing these words, the selfish friend realized his mistake. He felt deeply ashamed and sincerely apologized for his behavior. The other friend forgave him, but both of them learned that true friendship is proved by loyalty, courage, and sacrifice during difficult times. From that day onward, they remained more honest and faithful to each other.
