Once upon a time, there lived a poor cobbler in a small village. He earned his livelihood by repairing shoes. Although his income was very limited, he was honest, hardworking, and content with his simple life. Every morning he started his work with a smiling face and spent the whole day singing while repairing shoes. His cheerful nature attracted the attention of everyone in the village. He believed that happiness did not depend on wealth but on peace of mind and honest earnings. Near the cobbler's house lived a wealthy banker who possessed enormous wealth but was never truly happy. One day, out of curiosity, he asked the cobbler, “How much do you earn in a year?” The cobbler smiled and replied, “I have never counted my yearly income. I earn enough to feed my family and live peacefully. 

That is all I need.” The banker was surprised to hear such a reply. He thought that the cobbler was happy only because he had never experienced real wealth. The following day, the banker visited the cobbler with a heavy bag containing a large sum of money. Handing it over, he said, “Keep this money. It will save you from future hardship and make your life more comfortable.” At first, the cobbler politely refused the gift, saying that he had no need for such a huge amount of money. 

However, the banker insisted repeatedly, and finally the cobbler accepted it out of respect. From that very night, the cobbler's peaceful life changed completely. He became restless and anxious. He hid the money beneath the floor of his small house but constantly feared that thieves might discover it. Every unusual sound at night made him frightened. He could neither sleep peacefully nor concentrate on his work. The songs that once filled his little workshop disappeared, and his cheerful face became gloomy. Instead of enjoying life, he spent every moment worrying about protecting his newly acquired wealth.

After several days of mental suffering, the cobbler realized that the money had stolen his greatest treasure his peace of mind. Early one morning, he went to the banker's house and returned the bag of money. He said politely, “Sir, I am grateful for your kindness, but this money has taken away my happiness. I would rather remain poor with peace than become rich with endless anxiety.” The banker was deeply impressed by the cobbler's wisdom. He understood that true happiness cannot be bought with money. From that day onward, he learned to value contentment, honesty, and inner peace more than material wealth.

Moral: Contentment is the greatest wealth, and peace of mind is more valuable than riches.
