Once there was a poor woodcutter. He lived in a village. One day, he was cutting wood near a river. Suddenly, his axe fell into the water. The woodcutter became very sad. He sat beside the river and started crying. A fairy appeared and asked him why he was crying. He told her about his lost axe.

The fairy went into the river and brought a golden axe. But the woodcutter said, “It is not mine.” Then she brought a silver axe. Again he said, “It is not mine.” Finally, she brought an iron axe. Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter in a small village near a forest. He was very honest, hardworking, and simple-minded. He never told lies and never wanted anything that belonged to others.
One day, the woodcutter went to the forest as usual. He was cutting a large tree near a deep river. While he was working, an unfortunate thing happened. His iron axe suddenly slipped from his hand and fell into the river. The river was very deep, and the current was strong. The woodcutter did not know how to swim. So, he could not get his axe back.
The poor man became very worried because the axe was his only means of earning money. Without it, he could not cut wood or support his family. He sat on the bank of the river and began to cry bitterly. After some time, a beautiful fairy appeared before him. She looked kind and gentle. Seeing the woodcutter crying, she asked, “Why are you so sad, my good man?”
The woodcutter respectfully replied, “Madam, I am a poor woodcutter. While cutting wood, my axe fell into this river. It is my only axe. Without it, I cannot earn my living.” The fairy felt sorry for the honest man and decided to help him. She went down into the river and disappeared beneath the water. After a few moments, she came back with a shining golden axe in her hand.

My axe is made of iron.” The fairy was pleased with his answer. She again went into the river and returned with a beautiful silver axe. She asked, “Is this your axe?”
Again the woodcutter replied honestly, “No, Madam. This is not my axe either.” For the third time, the fairy went into the river. This time she came back with an old iron axe with a wooden handle. As soon as the woodcutter saw it, his face brightened with joy. He happily cried out, “Yes! This is my axe. This is the axe I lost.”
The fairy was highly impressed by the woodcutter’s honesty. She smiled and said, “You are a truly honest man. Many people would have claimed the golden or silver axe. But you spoke the truth even though you are poor.” Then she gave him not only his iron axe but also the golden axe and the silver axe as rewards for his honesty.
The woodcutter was surprised and delighted. He thanked the fairy from the bottom of his heart. Carrying the three axes, he returned home happily. His family was also very pleased to hear the story. Soon the news of the woodcutter's honesty spread throughout the village. Everyone praised him for his truthfulness and good character.

He sat beside the river and began to cry bitterly. After some time, a beautiful fairy appeared before him. She looked kind and gentle. The fairy asked, “Why are you crying, good man?”

The fairy smiled at his honesty and went into the river for the third time. Soon she returned with an old iron axe with a wooden handle. As soon as the woodcutter saw it, his face brightened with joy. “Yes, this is my axe! This is exactly the one I lost,” he said happily.
The fairy was highly pleased with his truthfulness. She said, “You are a rare example of honesty. Many people would have claimed the golden or silver axe.
