Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani was one of the greatest Islamic scholars and saints in history. From his childhood, he was known for his truthfulness, good character, and deep respect for his parents. He was born in Gilan and spent his early years there. When he became eighteen years old, he decided to travel to Baghdad, which was then a famous center of learning, to pursue higher education and gain religious knowledge.

Before his departure, his loving mother gave him some valuable advice. She handed him forty gold coins, which were carefully sewn inside his clothes for safety. Then she said, “My dear son, always speak the truth. Never tell a lie, even if your life is in danger.” Abdul Qadir promised his mother that he would follow her advice under all circumstances.

After saying goodbye to his family, he joined a caravan of merchants and travelers heading toward Baghdad. In those days, long journeys were very dangerous because robbers often attacked travelers on lonely roads and forests. For this reason, people usually traveled in groups.

For several days, the journey continued peacefully. One afternoon, while the caravan was passing through a dense forest, a large group of armed robbers suddenly attacked them. The travelers became frightened and helpless. The robbers took money, jewelry, and other valuable belongings from everyone.

A robber approached young Abdul Qadir and asked, “Boy, do you have anything valuable with you?” Without hesitation, he replied, “Yes, I have forty gold coins hidden inside my clothes.”

The robber thought that the boy was making fun of him and walked away. After some time, another robber came and asked the same question. Abdul Qadir gave exactly the same answer. This surprised the robber greatly. He immediately took the boy to their leader.

The leader of the robbers was a feared and notorious man. Looking at the young traveler, he asked, “Why are you saying that you have gold coins? You could easily hide the truth and save your money.” Abdul Qadir calmly answered, “Before leaving home, I promised my mother that I would never tell a lie. I cannot break that promise for any reason.”

The leader ordered his men to search the boy. They found the forty gold coins exactly where he had described. The leader was astonished. He could not believe that such a young boy would choose truth over personal safety and wealth.

Deeply moved, the robber chief asked, “You knew that we were robbers. Why did you still tell us the truth?” Abdul Qadir replied, “A true believer should never lie. My mother trusted me, and I cannot betray her trust. If I tell a lie today, I will lose my honesty and my faith.”

These simple but powerful words touched the leader's heart. Tears rolled down his cheeks. He realized that while a young boy was faithfully keeping a promise made to his mother, he himself had spent years disobeying the commands of Allah and harming innocent people.

Filled with regret, the leader cried and said, “Today this young boy has taught me a lesson that no one else could teach.” He immediately repented for his sins and decided to abandon robbery forever. Seeing the change in their leader, all the robbers also repented sincerely and promised to lead honest lives.

They returned all the stolen goods to the travelers and even helped them continue their journey safely. Abdul Qadir eventually reached Baghdad, completed his education, and later became one of the most respected scholars in the Muslim world. His wisdom, honesty, and devotion inspired millions of people for generations.

This incident remains one of the finest examples of truthfulness and moral courage. It teaches us that honesty has the power to transform hearts, correct wrongdoers, and bring positive change to society. No matter how difficult the situation may be, a truthful person ultimately earns respect, trust, and success.

Moral: Truth always triumphs. Honesty is the best policy.
